Overall Evaluation of choreography piece- Lesson 10

Evaluating the piece – Lesson 10

After performing our choreography last week, we received some feedback this was to make our initial changes before performing.

The changes we made were the following:

-          Transition into geometric shape motif and from the geometric shape into walking clump

-          Section of unison Megan and Daisy household motif was added so the second time we repeat it it's different and more abstract

-          Statue/ New movement when the duets are being performed in the 2nd piece of music

-          The ending added and cleaned up the motifs and created a more impactful section to link within the music and to shorten the improvisation at the end

By making these changes I believe that we referred to the feedback is given and took what was said on board and we added the last few dimensions to the piece which were necessary.

One of the new motifs created for the end section was based on this photo above from Crystal Pite’s ‘Solo Echo’ piece. We were inspired by this as it allowed us to link back to breaking from conformity which was the choreographic aim we wanted to portray and gave us the imagery which we needed to help portray this.

Following, this overall I believe our final piece links and connects to our original theme of conformity and the idea of expressing individuality. As a group, we didn’t need to make any changes to the outcome or intention of the piece only adapting and developing ideas to fit within this. Overlooking the whole process what I personally found challenging was attaching the first few motifs we created to the music and then filling these out with transitions, transitions was certainly an element of choreographing I found the hardest. Also, I think as a group we choreographed motifs and worked together really well, listening and including everyone’s ideas which I believe is what has made our piece really strong. There were moments in the creative process we struggled to be inspired but referring to the practitioner Crystal Pite allowed us to develop ideas, along with using the choreography methods we studied at the beginning of the term. To conclude, I am really proud of the workings of the group as a whole and how the piece has come together after the weeks of creating and developing, I think we have really shown our choreographic intention that was set from the very beginning.

Final Performance

As a whole, our final performance of the group choreography went really well and I felt like the group really captivated the emotions and intentions of the choreographic aims. The performance and delivery of the piece expressed our stimulus and was successful. As an individual, I believe that I made sure the piece came together by working with the others and being a strong team with the rehearsals along with the final performance. To finalise my overall thoughts I am really proud of the group and how we have come together over these 10 weeks to create a group choreography with such a complex theme.

  1. Well done Abi, I think you have considered what worked for you in the process and how you overcame any challenges really well. In the future, what would you change about how you structured your time or how you created movement to make it more effective for you?

    1. Thank you for your comment Daisy. For future reference I would come up with more of a step by step plan that I can follow and time manage more. I also believe that I will use the creative processes used for this piece and maybe look into more ways and different ideas of creating movement.

  2. this is a great evaluation of your work and shows how you overcame challenges well. If you were given this task again is there anything you would do differently? be that; time management, choreographic techniques, or the idea as a whole?

    1. Thank you Nathan. If we was to do this again I'd certainly aim to better our time management and set more constructive goals as well as using different choreographic techniques by looking into developing choreography further.

  3. I have enjoyed observing the development of your groups choreography over the last few weeks, you have clearly worked well as a team and have managed to produce a very interesting piece. The photo you have chosen shows emotion greatly, is this a quality you have focused on? How did you think you will perform your piece facially when expressing individuality?

    1. Thank you Louisa, the photo has come from inspiration and is something we reflect in our movement for expressing the idea of breaking from conformity and aiming/reaching towards the theme individuality.
The beginning of the piece we have set the facial expressions to be blank and very emotionless where a nearer the end we are more expressive and reflecting the idea of becoming our own character and having our own personality.
