Translation Method - Lesson 3
Translation Method – Lesson 3
In todays lesson we did a task based on the childhood game Chinese whispers called the translation method. We worked in our household groups; we started the task in a line with the person at the start facing the front ad the other three facing the opposite direction. They were then given a word by Miss Evans which they had to choreograph eight counts of movement based on the word to then show the next person. Examples of some of the words given were: gentle, heavy, tick, sticky, together, inside and many more. The next person had two chances to learn the eight counts, who then showed the next with only one chance and the last person had one chance to learn the movement to then perform this to the others to see the difference between the original eight counts and the new eight counts. Each person got a different word meaning there was a total of thirty-two counts of the original movement and then we also had the new movement which was altered to how the person could process it in the chance they had. This meant there were two sides to one motif the original and new.
Our four words were:
· line
· gather
· falling
· four
The following task we were asked to complete was to place these motifs into a phrase with transitions, formations and including the new and original movement. As a group we figured out the order of which we should have the motifs in the phrase and how we would include choreographic devices. The devices we used in the final phrase was accumulation, repetition, levels and canon, with different formations including a square, rhombus and line. For the alteration from the different formations we used transitions or movements. The order of the phrase words is line to four to falling to gather and back to four. Overall, I found the task quite time consuming however was a really good way of creating new motifs.
Below is a link to the clip of the finished phrase:
After watching the video of your finished phrase, I think your use of levels was really effective to create unique shapes and variation within your piece whilst everyone is still completing the same movement, and I really like how each person faced a different direction at certain moments, which really emphasised this. Which elements of your phrase were you proud of, and what aspects would you like to change or develop?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. I was really proud of how the beginning of the phrase fitted together and how the different original and new motifs linked together smoothly. I don't think there would be anything I would change; however, I would develop the piece further to add new motifs together and develop the motifs and formations further.
DeleteI loved watching what your group created! It is so detailed and includes some really interesting patterns, changes and positions. In what way did the choreographic devices (accumulation, repetition, levels and canon) change the quality of your piece?
ReplyDeleteThank You for your comment Louisa. It gave our piece more depth and quality aswell as giving the choreography more dimensions.
DeleteThis method seems to have produced an interesting outcome with your group from the footage you have shared. Has this task influenced the way you created any material for your final piece?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, yes this task has been used for creating our final choreography piece.
