Generating Choreography Ideas- Lesson 4 and 5

The image above shows our geometric shape in preperation to start that section.

In lesson 4, as a group we were discussing our final stimulus along with sharing our idea with the other two groups and they shared theirs. After, discussing all our ideas we then went onto the task of developing three motifs using three different words that link to our stimulus.

Abi and Megan had chosen the word connection and created a few counts of eight based on this word, this is shown below:

Mhairi and Devanshi had chosen the word uncertainty and made a small motif based on this word, the clip is shown below:

Caitlyn and Daisy created movement linking to their chosen word influence, they also adapted their motif from their original, this is shown below:

We all then came together and taught the three different motifs to everyone in the group and shared any ideas of how we would adapt these within the group choreography and how we would use each motif. The connection motif generated ideas based on performing it at levels or in a geometric shape repeating the motif with different patterns. The motif linked to the word influence was adapted between just Caitlyn and Daisy and then after the class, we stayed to work out how we could adapt the motif for all six of us. Following this, as a group, we decided that we would use this motif as our entrance as shown in the clip below.

In the next lesson as a group we looked into the structure of our piece and what we wanted to include along with finding a beginning and an end. The aim of the beginning is to “Establish to the audience the world they are entering” and to want to leave an “lasting impression” on the audience at the end of the choreography piece (kate Flat,2019). Our first draft of our structure has a beginning and end then sections and pointers we want to include but unsure on the order. The beginning is the Influence motif and the end is going to be a repeat of the influence motif but this time it’s upgraded in a way to show individuality and to contrast with the beginning. The pointers and sections we want to include in a random order are the following:

·         Abstract and overarching theme> episodic >individual episodes of conformity

·         Geometric shape/ levelled connection motif

·         Train section> lining to the underground map>breaking of conformity > watched ‘MotionHouse- underground’ dance performance

·         Unison section/clump> breaks into individual movement> repeat twice > 1st doesn’t work have difficulty breaking away> 2nd works able to breakaway

·         Household sections >duet – Megan and Daisy >quad – Abi, Devanshi, Mhairi and Caitlyn

·         Train section>body percussion > 1 person starts then the rest follow > highlights bystander effect

After, we discussed the structure we then moved onto a task based around gestures this is where we picked a word each between the six of us and create a gesture based on the word, the words had to link back to our stimulus. A gesture is “non-verbal communication” and used as “descriptive codes” (Kate Flat,2019). The six words we chose were: pressure, uncertainty, influence, judgement, nonchalance and restrain. Each person in the group then picked one of the words and created a gesture based on it and then taught the rest of the group the gesture. Once we had done, we then extended this simple gesture and developed it into something bigger, then bigger till it was at its maximum. This was done like this to highlight and show the stages of development.

Below is a link to the video of the gestures and the ways in which we developed them:

  1. You have explained how your group is slowly beginning to bring movement together in detail, giving videos as evidence on the progress you are making. You mentioned how you all created stimuli in smaller groups based on specific words, leaving you with three stimuli overall. Why did you decide to use Daisy and Caitlyn's motif as an entrance to your dance? Do you want to give the audience a sense of uncertainty at the beginning of the routine to amplify your choreographic intension?

    1. Thank you Storm for your feedback. As a group we decided to chose that set motif as it was something we felt we could use as a way to come onto the stage and making a strong entrance to highlight our choreographic intention. I believe that the beginning of our piece was a way to show conformity straight away then further on in the piece we will then highlight the breakaway from conformity.

  2. The structure of this blog is really effective for showing your choreographic process and the developments that you made with each motif. Now that you have advanced the motif from two people to six, what dynamics or devices may you include to ensure that this is a striking and engaging entrance for the audience?

    1. Thank you Daisy for your comment. From adapting the motif from two people to six we made sure each person had a set count to create a more dynamic effect to when each person sets out on the stage. We used the choreographic devices unison, repetition and canon in the entrance.

  3. You have included great structure and detail in this blog. I can see you are working together effectively to create movement material and are thinking very carefully about the layout of your piece. How did you find combining the small phrase you learnt in your pairs together as a group? Was it easy to insert them into a longer section?

    1. Thank you for your comment. I personally find doing this section fairly easy as we were able to get the small phrases to link together really smoothly making the process simple to do.
