Expanding and Developing a motif- Lesson 6
Expanding and Developing a motif- Lesson 6
In the start of this lesson as group we begin to discuss
music and how we would find the right piece and something which would suit the
stimulus of our piece. Our two starting points for this was to start looking at
film soundtracks and neo classical pieces of music from other choreography
which would then start a brainstorming point as to what style of music we would
be looking to have. We also looked at how much material we roughly had which
was 1-minute 20s not including the ending which would make the material count 3
minutes. This gave us an idea of how we would then plan our time to allow us to
create choreography and finish by the assessment.
For the rest of the lesson me, Devanshi, Caitlyn and Mhairi
started a new motif as our household due to Megan and Daisy being in self
isolation. We developed a motif based on the choreography of ‘Solo Echo’ by
Crystal Pite. In partners we came up with two different motifs linking to the
inspiration we had from the piece, that would then eventually join and be a
unison section these duets were based on the idea of internal conflict. In the end section of the motif we adapted the idea of conformity
by developing one section from unison to having one-person branch out doing
something to contrast the original movement. The clip of this is linked below:

As groups we performed a motif we wanted to show and received
feedback from our peers as well as Miss Evans both positive and constructive.
We gave each group feedback and discussed their stimulus and how the movement
linked to it.
The feedback we were given after our performance was the
following:
Conformity came across clear and able to see the stimulus
through the movement
Needed to work on the precision of movements and counts –
stronger accents
Overall, I found this lesson productive as we were able to
work on building material even though we had two members absent. In my opinion using inspiration from Crystal Pite really allowed us to build movement from this and made developing choreography more productive. After the
lesson, we sent the clip of the movement and notes into the group chat so the
others could see what we had worked on. Daisy then came up with a small motif
in correspondence to our household motif, the link of this material is below:
From watching the choreography that you developed in this lesson I can really see where your inspiration came from and how you adapted the movements from Pite's piece into something which related to your stimulus. Were there any other elements of Pite's work which inspired you other than the movements themselves, for example the dynamics or emotive performance?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Daisy. I'm really glad that you were able to see the connection. I really enjoyed watching her piece as getting a feel for the emotion and performance set as the intention gave me inspiration for the way the performance should be for the group choreography.
DeleteThis is a well detailed blog, well done. I can see you have adapted well and still worked effectively with your circumstances of missing group members. When looking at the music, why did you choose to look into the more neo classical pieces? Do they bring out the same movement quality you are aiming for?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback. When looking at music we decided to go for more neo classical as we felt this was what went better with our stimulus and they allowed us to create movement based on what we were aiming to do.
DeleteThis is a great blog Abi, it's very useful to have your inspiration along side your interpretation to see the connection. Is there a reason you started your search for music with film soundtracks and neo classical pieces of music?
ReplyDeleteThank you Nathan for your feedback. In answer to your question there was no particular reason for our starting point to finding music other than the style of movements we had decided.
